A simple duplicate for a steel-edged Honda key is not the same as a lost-all-keys Toyota with a transponder chip, and neither is the same as a BMW smart key or a Ford proximity fob. A driver in Central Pennsylvania may lose the only fob for a Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, or Chevrolet and discover the car will unlock mechanically but will not start. Ignition work is another branch. A key that is hard to turn may be worn, but the ignition cylinder may also have damaged wafers, a failing housing, or debris inside the lock. Repair can save the original keying when the hardware is still serviceable. Replacement is the better call when parts are broken, seized, or too worn to hold a dependable key code. Ignition hardware has its own rules. A worn cylinder may need wafer service, cleaning, lubrication and re-pinning rather than replacement. A failed ignition switch, damaged lock housing or broken key fragment is a different repair. Good automotive locksmithing means matching the mechanical key, the chip, the remote functions and the immobilizer registration instead of treating every car key as the same blank with a battery in it.

Electronic keys add another layer. A good mechanical repair will not help if the transponder chip, remote head, smart proximity fob, or immobilizer registration is the real fault. We judge both sides: does the key physically operate the lock, and does the vehicle recognize it? That is why cutting, decoding, VIN-based origination, and programming all matter in the decision.
The first thing that matters is the vehicle, not the key. Have the year, make, model, and trim ready if you can, because a 2014 Ford Escape, a 2019 Honda Accord, and a push-to-start Toyota can require very different blanks, chips, remotes, and programming steps. The VIN helps confirm the exact key code or immobilizer system, especially when every working key is lost. You can usually find it at the lower corner of the windshield or on registration and insurance documents. We also need to know whether the vehicle uses a metal ignition key, a transponder key, a laser-cut sidewinder blade, a remote-head key, or a smart proximity fob.
Be ready to explain what still works. If you have one working key, duplication and programming are usually more straightforward than total key loss. If the key turns the door but not the ignition, that points in a different direction than a dead remote or a security light flashing on the dash. Tell us if the ignition is sticky, if the key is bent or cracked, if the fob went through water, or if someone already tried to force the cylinder.
