That requires planning the key bitting, avoiding weak cross-keying, tracking keyways, and choosing hardware that can support the system without creating security problems later.

Life-safety hardware is its own category. Panic bars and exit devices must open correctly under pressure and must not violate egress rules such as NFPA 101 requirements or ADA usability expectations. Keyless entry adds another layer: keypads, fobs, electrified locks, power supplies, request-to-exit devices, and credential management. Fire-rated doors cannot be treated like ordinary doors; drilling, dogging, latch function and closer adjustment all affect how that assembly performs. Key systems add another layer. A small office may only need clean rekeying and accurate stamping. Traffic matters. A back office door with light use is judged differently than a public entrance, a restroom, a mechanical room or a tenant space with constant key use. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 hardware is built for heavier cycles than Grade 2 or Grade 3, but even good hardware fails early when the closer slams, the strike is miscut, or the frame has shifted. We look for symptoms that point away from the lock: latch not entering cleanly, deadlatch sitting in the strike pocket, door rubbing at the header, loose continuous hinges, or a closer fighting the latch speed.

Replacement makes sense when the existing hardware is the wrong grade, obsolete, non-compliant, badly corroded or no longer secure after abuse. Repair makes sense when the core components are still solid and the cause can be corrected.
